Understanding veins

The circulatory system

Via the circulatory system, a complex network of blood vessels, all body tissue is nourished. It is more than 100 000 kilometres long and consists of arteries and veins as well as the most delicate capillaries connecting arteries and veins.

The venous system

In respect of the venous system a distinction is made between superficial veins (perforating veins) and deep veins. The superficial venous system lies close under the skin and always transports blood only in one direction from the skin layers via the perforating veins into the deep vein system.

Veins and their function

The heart serves as a pump for the transportation of blood in the arteries and carries in an adult about 7 000 litres of blood into the circulatory system.

The development of vein problems

A precondition for well functioning venous valves is sufficient tension in the venous wall. Only then can the venous valves close properly.

Types of venous disease

Spider veins, varicose veins and thromboses: Here you find an overview of the most common types of diseas.

Diagnosis

How is the degree of severity of the disease determined? The medical profession knows of different diagnostic approaches.

Compression therapy

The basic treatment in the case of vein problems and disease of the lymphatic system is compression therapy. It is also carried out as therapy accompanying other methods of treatment and as a preventive measure.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a most exciting time and a very special situation for the female body – and the venous system does not remain unaffected.

Thrombosis

Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms on the vascular wall. The veins clog, the venous valves no longer function and the backflow of blood is disturbed. This leads to blood congestion.

Preventing venous problems

How can you prevent venous problems? Here you find practical tips and tricks, and exercises easy to perform.
