Medicinal procedure

Chronic venous insufficiency

In the case of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) the walls of the veins change so that they allow more albuminous fluid to escape. In the body tissue surrounding the veins this fluid accumulates as so-called edema. The edema protective effect of some medicines can help reduce the porousness of the venous walls and thus make it difficult for edema to progress. Most medicines of this kind consist of herbal extracts such as horse chestnut seeds, red vine leaf and butcher’s broom extract.
However, the efficacy of the edema protective effect should not be exaggerated, as it not possible to reverse the development of the varicose veins. As a rule, the medicine is used to maintain the successful results of current treatment and to support other medical measures, in particular, compression therapy.
